Essendon Keilor College is currently in partnership with the Calder Cannons Football Club, which allows students who play with the Cannons in the TAC Cup and have enter the College in Year 11 to undertake their VCE studies in conjunction with the Certificate II in Sport and recreation. The aim of the program is to prepare students for the AFL draft while also providing them with a sound academic background. Students already enrolled in the College participate in the program and students enrolling in the program have come from all over Australia.
The Calder Cannons specialist coaching in support of the football program. In a typical week students complete three weight sessions, one large group training session and one small group training session and three skills sessions. Students also play in a number of different competitions.
The success of the program can be seen by the number of students drafted to AFL clubs since 1999.
