The Calder Cannons FC are excited to announce that we will have total control and conduct of the Towards Zero Calder Cannons Youth Girls Academy. The Youth Girls Academy has previously been under the control of AFL Victoria, however with the growth of Youth Girls Football, it has been handed to the TAC Cup Regions to run.
As we head into unchartered ground in female football with the establishment of an AFL Women's Competition and a Youth Girls TAC Cup competition, the Cannons look forward to becoming a leader in Youth Girls elite football.
The Towards Zero Cannons Youth Girls Academy will be will be structured in a manner that follows the boys elite structure. There will be a TAC Cup Squad consisting of girls turning 16, 17 and 18 years of age in 2017.
This squad will comprise of 80 girls, and will commence training on Monday 17th October. They will train Monday and Wednesday nights starting at 6.30pm for approximately 1 ½ hours, with the exception of Melbourne Cup week where there will be no training. Training will conclude on the 14th December when a selection of approximately 40 girls will be invited back to form the TAC Cup Squad for training and games in Season 2017, commencing in late January and concluding in early April.
There will also be a Cannons Youth Girls Development Squad that will be for girls turning 14 and 15 years of age in 2017. This Development Squad will train on three Tuesday nights in December and then return late January for 9 further sessions and game against a like-squad from another TAC Cup Region.
Over the past 4 months Calder Cannons FC recruiting staff have been closely watching and assessing girls football conducted in the Region. As a result of this, invitations will be sent to girls for both Squads in late September / early October.
We appreciate the interest and patience of all involved as we embark on a new era for the Calder Cannons Football Club and football in the North West.
